Gay marriage supporters look to next session

(AP) ? With a vote to legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois looking less likely to happen in the next few days, supporters of marriage equality are looking ahead to the following legislative session as their next best hope.

A Senate committee voted 8-5 late Thursday in favor of a bill that would allow gay marriage. But with key supporters absent, Senate Democrats delayed a full floor vote. The Senate then canceled its Friday schedule, and President John Cullerton said lawmakers are unlikely to return to Springfield before the session ends Jan. 9. New lawmakers will be sworn in that day.

Sen. Heather Steans, the bill's sponsor, said it was a matter of "when, not if" the measure will pass. She said people across Illinois and state lawmakers are changing their minds every day and supporting gay marriage.

"This is never going to be an easy one, but it's only going to get easier," Steans said.

Cullerton said it might be weeks before the bill gets a full Senate vote. His spokeswoman conceded that "the bill needs work," and even Steans suggested working with recalcitrant Republicans to get a bipartisan agreement.

"What's important when we reconvene is that we work to protect and strengthen all Illinois families, and that's what this legislation does," Cullerton said in a statement released by a coalition of supporters.

Hopes were high for a productive end to the 97th General Assembly, with legislation not only on gay marriage but on assault-weapons restrictions and a solution to the $96 billion hole in state retirement-benefit accounts.

Gun curbs advanced, and a pension fix has been proposed in the House, which isn't scheduled to return to Springfield until Sunday, giving Gov. Pat Quinn reason to stay optimistic that his top priority will still get attention.

Democrats hold a 35-24 majority in the Senate, but party members outside Chicago don't always toe the line. Not all are on board with extending marriage rights to same-sex couples, and some key supporters did not attend Thursday's session.

Hoping to ride momentum from the November elections and public encouragement from President Barack Obama, backers were jolted by the postponement.

A gay actor who stars in a popular TV comedy campaigned for the measure in Illinois while religious leaders ? including 1,700 clergy, from Catholic to Muslim ? united in writing to exhort lawmakers to oppose it.

Ralph Rivera, a lobbyist for the Illinois Family Institute, told lawmakers the bill was "an attack on our particular religious beliefs" and that it would force churches and other religious institutions to allow their facilities to be used for same-sex marriages.

Steans said that wouldn't be the case, and that she planned to work with Republicans to address some of those concerns.

Supporters said they pressed the matter in the waning days of the General Assembly's session to take advantage of soaring support in the state and nationally. And lame-duck lawmakers theoretically have more freedom to vote without fear of voter backlash.

Even though Democrats will claim a 40-19 advantage in the new session, newcomers will bring more diverse views in a state where southern Illinoisans live closer to Birmingham, Ala., than to Chicago.

The plan comes just 18 months after Illinois recognized civil unions.

If Illinois approves gay marriage, it would become the 10th state in the nation to do so.

Women's history pioneer Gerda Lerner dies at 92

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Gerda Lerner, a pioneer in the field of women's history and a founding member of the National Organization for Woman, has died in Wisconsin, her son said Thursday. She was 92.

Lerner, credited with founding the nation's first graduate program in women's history, died peacefully Wednesday evening of apparent old age at an assisted-living facility in Madison, Dan Lerner told The Associated Press.

"She was always a very strong-willed and opinionated woman," he recalled. "I think those are the hallmarks of great people, people that have strong points of view and firmly held convictions."

She was born into a privileged Jewish family in Vienna, Austria, in 1920. When the Nazis rose to power, she was imprisoned and spent her 18th birthday behind bars, in a cell with two other young women who had been arrested for political work. Jailers restricted rations for Jews, but the gentile women shared their food with her.

"They taught me how to survive," Lerner wrote in "Fireweed: a Political Autobiography." ''Everything I needed to get through the rest of my life I learned in jail in those six weeks."

She said the experience taught her how society can manipulate people. It was a lesson she saw reinforced in American academia by history professors who taught as though the only figures worth studying were men.

"When I was faced with noticing that half the population has no history, and I was told that that's normal, I was able to resist the pressure" to accept that conclusion, she told the Wisconsin Academic Review in 2002.

She became impassioned about the issue of gender equality. As a professor at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., she founded a women's studies program ? including the first graduate program in women's history in the U.S.

She later moved to Madison, where she helped establish a doctoral program in women's history at the University of Wisconsin.

Her daughter, Stephanie Lerner, said her mother earned a reputation as a no-nonsense professor who held her students to rigorous standards that some may not have appreciated at the time. One former student wrote to Gerda Lerner 30 years later saying no one had been more influential in her life.

"She said, 'I thought you were impossible, difficult, not understanding, but you gave me a model of commitment that I've never had before,'" Stephanie Lerner recalled. "That's just how she was."

Even as Gerda Lerner held others to high standards, she took no shortcuts herself. For example, Stephanie Lerner said her mother loved hiking in the mountains, even as she got older and her mobility was challenged.

Stephanie Lerner recalled one particular hike with her mother about 30 years ago on a steamy California day. Stephanie Lerner brought a light day-pack, but Gerda Lerner toted a hefty 50-pound sack because she wanted to train for future hikes.

"I was much younger and very in shape. But at a certain point I said I couldn't do it anymore," Stephanie Lerner said. "She just went on ahead. That was her joy, her determination."

Gerda Lerner wrote several textbooks on women's history, including "The Creation of Patriarchy" and "The Creation of Feminist Consciousness." She also edited "Black Women in White America," one of the first books to document the struggles and contributions of black women in American history.

She married Carl Lerner, a respected film editor, in 1941. They lived in Hollywood for a few years before returning to New York.

The couple were involved in activism that ranged from attempting to unionize the film industry to working in the civil rights movement.

When asked how she developed such a strong sense of justice and fairness, she told the Wisconsin Academy Review that the feeling started in childhood. She recalled watching her mother drop items on the floor and walk away, leaving servants to clean up her mess.

"I wanted the world to be a just and fair place, and it obviously wasn't ? and that disturbed me right from the beginning," she said.

She became determined to fight for equality, and she encouraged others to take up their own fights against inequality. She said people who want to change the world don't need to be part of a large organized group ? they just have to find a cause they believe in and never stop fighting for it.

She credited that philosophy for helping her remain happy despite the horrors she lived through as a young woman.

"I am happy because I found the balance between adjusting, or surviving what I was put through, and acting for what I believed in," she said in 2002. "That's the key."

Personal Development Forum: Self Improvement Tips That ...

Learning about yourself is a team sport. There are great teachers, friends and professionals who can help you analyze your thoughts and explain your feelings. Be nice to your body to better your self improvement. If your body feels you need to eat or drink, you should do it. Meeting your body's needs this way will keep it dependable for years to come. Leading an unhealthy lifestyle will lead to premature aging and illness. You should not shop out of comfort. If you do a hobby versus raising your credit card bill, you won't have to stress over those bills and will have less clutter at home to clean. Exercise even if you are at your ideal weight. There are many different reasons to exercise. When you exercise, your body makes a variety of chemicals that assist in relaxing you. Seek out new challenges. This can create new possibilities in your life. You will see, do and explore more things than you ever thought possible. You may even start a new model by doing something that has never been done before. Rather than following in other people's footsteps, try doing your own thing and forging your own path. Do you drink a lot? Are nicotine or other destructive habits something that harms you? The body is a source of great wonder and is vital to our life, as such respect is what it deserves. You can improve your life by replacing bad habits with good ones. Look at your life, what you are doing that may be harmful, and work on omitting things that need to be removed from your life. Getting healthier is a self improvement step that can have far-reaching positive repercussions. When you are healthy, you feel better and have more energy. Your mind is less cloudy, and you can even gain more free time and cut down on expenses because you won't need to visit the doctor as frequently. Make adopting healthier habits a goal.

Create a personal development plan by determining what your personal values are. If you go against your values, you are shooting yourself in the foot. Instead of this, you should focus your energy on the things that you want to develop that also go along with your own values. This allows you to implement personal and professional changes that will last forever. Are you having a hard time meeting that special someone? Perhaps you should try the Internet. Up to 40% of couples meet over the Internet nowadays. It is possible that certain someone is looking for you. Both sites have their strengths and weaknesses. Try to read encouraging books. Some people may look to a religious text, while others might look for inspiring quotes. You may need help staying on top of life and keeping your mind clear, and a trusted book whose words have meaning to you is a great resource to fall back on. Do you frequently consume alcohol? Do you do other harmful things like smoke cigarettes? Your body should be treated with the utmost respect. Eradicating negative behaviors is key to leading a better lifestyle. Take a hard look at your daily life and find things that could benefit from a positive restructuring.

Personal development starts with leadership. Leadership has many definitions, but many people think of it as "influence." Consider your leadership background. What are the specific incidences that made the biggest influence in your life? How did the events that took place have an effect on you? Evaluate attributes that you possess which contribute to your role as a team player. It is through these questions that you can best determine your role in a team environment. Usually what brings your happy mood down is stress. When stress happens in our minds, it also has detrimental affects on our physical health. To retain clarity of mind and the motivation to work towards our goals, it is critical to banish unnecessary stress from our minds. Each day, take time to quiet your mind and relax. Taking the time to renew your center will help you to find peace within yourself. Understand that there is a divide between where you are and where you wish to go. You need to acknowledge this so you can take your very first step. If you can't figure out what the difference is, chances are you won't find success in reaching your goals. Begin your self improvement with a look at your leadership qualities. When thinking about leadership, think about it in terms of your level of influence on the world around you. Reflect back on your leadership experiences. Are there events that have had major impacts on your life? How have those events changed you? What is the key element that makes you behave as a team player? By carefully evaluating these questions, you can increase your awareness of your ability to function well in a team setting.

Are you an alcohol abuser? Do you make a habit of smoking or engaging in other harmful vices? Our bodies are important to maintain, and should be treated with care. If you want to start improving your life, you have to stop engaging in harmful activities. Consider all of your habits and opt to omit habits from your life that can be described as harmful.

Choose one aspect that you want to improve and put your effort into that. Perhaps there are several areas you want to improve, but focus on just one at a time. Since new habits are most effective when introduced slowly, you are also more likely to having your changes stick around for the long term. Always aim to keep self-discipline a priority as you work on bettering yourself. Make sure that you develop self control skills. Conquer desires of the flesh, such as, overeating, lust, greed and drunkenness. If you can cut out the negative aspects of your personality you'll find your entire being becomes healthier and happier. Anytime and anywhere, be ready for when your ideas strike. Carry paper with you everywhere. Making quick notes about the inspiration as it strikes you will jog your memory and add to the potential that you will later incorporate into a thoughtful creative process.

Find texts and phrases that sooth and encourage you. Some people see it spiritually, whereas others just find it inspirationally. Keeping something on hand that you can revisit when necessary is a great way to improve your mindset, and navigate such situations more effectively.

Be the best you can be at what you are doing! Use your passions to fuel your journey of personal fulfillment. Now, you cannot be the complete best at everything you do, but it does not hurt to try. Trying for greatness helps inspire others to adapt to the same mindset, giving them a boost of self-worth. Do work you enjoy, complete it the best you can, and your self-esteem will grow stronger. Find a variety of ways to keep yourself motivated to improve your life. The work is hard, but the advice to get started can make the work fun.

Senate panel to examine CIA contacts with "Zero Dark Thirty" filmmakers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After the Senate Intelligence Committee's chairwoman expressed outrage over scenes that imply "enhanced interrogations" of CIA detainees produced a breakthrough in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the panel has begun a review of contacts between the makers of the film "Zero Dark Thirty" and CIA officials.

In the latest controversy surrounding the film, Reuters has learned that the committee will examine records charting contacts between intelligence officials and the film's director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.

Investigators will examine whether the spy agency gave the filmmakers "inappropriate" access to secret material, said a person familiar with the matter. They will also probe whether CIA personnel are responsible for the portrayal of harsh interrogation practices, and in particular the suggestion that they were effective, the person said.

The intelligence committee's Democrats contend that is factually incorrect.

Zero Dark Thirty is a dramatized account of the hunt for al Qaeda leader bin Laden and the May 2011 U.S. Navy SEAL raid in which he was killed. Government e-mails and memoranda released to the conservative group Judicial Watch show that both the CIA and Pentagon gave the filmmakers extensive access.

But the film has also produced a series of awkward political headaches for President Barack Obama. Early on, Obama's Republican critics suggested it was a gimmick to boost his re-election campaign. But now, some of Obama's liberal supporters are attacking the film and officials who cooperated with its creators for allegedly promoting the effectiveness of torture.

The CIA had no comment on the latest congressional inquiry regarding the film.

One of the intelligence officials whom the documents show as having met with the filmmakers is Michael Morell, the CIA's deputy director at the time and now the agency's acting chief.

Current and former national security officials have said Morell, a highly regarded agency veteran, is a favorite to succeed retired Gen. David Petraeus as the agency's director.

CLOUD OVER MORELL?

But some of the same officials now say the controversy over the film's content has cast a cloud over Morell's prospects.

Last month, Intelligence Committee chairwoman Sen. Dianne Feinstein joined Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and former Republican Presidential candidate Sen. John McCain in sharply condemning what they described as "particularly graphic scenes of CIA officers torturing detainees" in Zero Dark Thirty.

The film has been screened in New York and Los Angeles but does not premiere nationwide until January 11.

In a December 19 letter to the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produced the film, the senators alleged it was "grossly inaccurate and misleading in its suggestion that torture resulted in information that led to the location" of bin Laden.

The three senators claim Zero Dark Thirty "clearly implies that the CIA's coercive interrogation techniques were effective in eliciting important information related to a courier" for bin Laden, who would unknowingly lead the agency to his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The senators assert, however, that their own review of CIA records proves that the story told in the film is "incorrect" and "the CIA learned of the existence of the courier, his true name and location through means unrelated to the CIA detention and interrogation program."

Sony, in response, released a statement from Bigelow and Boal, which said in part: "We depicted a variety of controversial practices and intelligence methods that were used in the name of finding bin Laden.

"The film shows that no single method was necessarily responsible for solving the manhunt, nor can any single scene taken in isolation fairly capture the totality of efforts the film dramatizes."

Boal said in an email that he was unaware of the Senate committee's interest and had had no contact with the panel.

The person familiar with the committee's plan to review administration dealings with the filmmakers said initially this would involve reviewing uncensored copies of CIA records regarding the film. The committee presently does not plan to contact the filmmakers directly, the source said.

A 'DRAMATIZATION'

Last year, the CIA and Pentagon, in response to a freedom of information request from Judicial Watch, released hundreds of pages of internal documents discussing the agencies' arrangements for dealing with Bigelow and Boal.

The documents, many heavily redacted, show that top CIA and Pentagon officials, including Morell and Michael Vickers, now the Pentagon's intelligence chief, talked to the filmmakers.

One Pentagon email exchange with Ben Rhodes, a senior White House national security aide, said Boal had been briefed by CIA officials "with the full knowledge and full approval/support" of Leon Panetta, who served as CIA director and then Secretary of Defense while the film was being prepared.

A second person familiar with the matter said the committee had acquired copies of the CIA records last year.

The committee originally obtained the uncensored records at the request of Republicans, who were looking for evidence that intelligence or Pentagon personnel inappropriately shared classified information with the filmmakers, this source said.

Other Congressional Republicans, most notably Representative Peter King, outgoing chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, complained loudly about dealings between the Obama administration and the filmmakers following reports it would be released shortly before the 2012 Presidential election. Ultimately, the film was not released until after the election.

Two days after the Senators made public their letter to Sony, the CIA released a statement by Morell, who said that Zero Dark Thirty was a "dramatization, not a realistic portrayal of the facts," and that while the agency had "interacted" with the filmmakers, it did not "control the final product."

Morell's statement was equivocal on whether "enhanced interrogations" had produced information critical to finding bin Laden.

"Whether enhanced interrogation techniques were the only timely and effective way to obtain information from those detainees, as the film suggests, is a matter of debate that cannot and never will be definitively resolved," Morell added.

Microsoft: Google is deliberately ruining YouTube on Windows Phone

1 hr.

A Microsoft legal representative has alleged foul play on the part of Google in withholding critical YouTube components from Windows Phone, relegating users of the mobile operating system to a second-class experience of the world's most popular video site. Google denies it.

Dave Heiner,?Microsoft vice president and deputy general counsel,?wrote Wednesday on a company blog?that Google refuses to let YouTube work properly with Windows Phone, and contends that's?because Microsoft offers a competing search engine, Bing.

But is Google really withholding features? A spokesperson for the company issued the following statement to NBC News:

Contrary to Microsoft?s claims, it?s easy for consumers to view YouTube videos on Windows phones. ?Windows phone users can access all the features of YouTube through our HTML5-based mobile website, including viewing high-quality video streams, finding favorite videos, seeing video ratings, and searching for video categories. ?In fact, we?ve worked with Microsoft for several years to help build a great YouTube experience on Windows phones.

In other words, the Web?browser version is feature-complete and should suffice.?

Still, Heiner said having "proper access" to YouTube on Windows Phone is "an important issue because consumers value YouTube access on their phone," and wrote?that "just last month we learned from YouTube that?senior executives at Google told them not to enable a first-class YouTube experience on Windows Phones."

Google's spokesperson did not?answer questions on this statement directly, but did tell?NBC News that "it?s not scalable to build and support individually tailored YouTube apps for every mobile platform."

This implies that?Windows Phone may be out of luck. Heiner's comments?come?in the wake of remarks last month by a Google Apps executive who indicated that they would not be working on Windows 8 or Windows Phone apps, citing a lack of users. "We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8," he told the website V3 at the time.

Perhaps Google's tune will change if Windows Phone gains more market share. But for now its focus on iOS and Android, which together represent nearly 90 percent of phones on the market.

Be honest...

I see a lot of people, mostly younger men and women who seem to just bounce around from one relationship to the next. They will be in a relationship with one person for a few months or maybe a few years and have a breakup and then immediately they are fixated on getting their next new relationship up and running again. Many of these people are never satisfied in the relationships they are in, but they don't seem to take the time to give themselves room to breathe between relationships and just enjoy the single life, if they even can.

Do you feel like you NEED to be in a relationship to be happy? I have spent 90% of my teenage and adult life single (I am 26), and very content, but perhaps I am the minority?

Everyone is different and has a unique perspective, so lets hear your story...

Your whole post simply reinforces the point OP is trying to make...
Many people (and yes mostly younger I have noticed too - it seems as people get older they realize that a relationship is not essential to being happy, but still there are some older people I know with the same mindset) "have" to be in a relationship to be fulfilled. I was like that, but eventually I realized I needed to be comfortable and confident with myself first before jumping into a relationship, and once I was, I found someone amazing. If you need a relationship to be happy you are going to simply have troubles in the relationship as you are using it as a crutch for your emotional support. A relationship is supposed to be the "icing the cake" but not the point of life. And viewing it as something you "need" will always end with misery, usually jealousy / possessiveness / staying with an abusive partner or one who is just not compatible and feeling miserable because you are terrified of not being in a relationship.

You have to be comfortable, confident, and happy with yourself / accept yourself before looking for a relationship. If you don't, it will just bring issues into the relationship. It happens all the time and happened to me all the time until I finally realized what was going on, why the patterns kept on repeating themselves, and why my relationships were failing.

Theres a fine line. Im completely confident in who I am, and am more than capable of spending time alone. However I still.....on stormy nights.....wish I had someone to hold, love, and to share lifes burdens with.

A relationship and union between two people is allot more than a glucose rush....or ICING ON THE CAKE

Its a sacred bond that was created by the good Lord himself so that we may tackle life's challenges....together? :Awemazing:

Sure one can be alone, but you are lying to yourself if you think you're above the common folk who seek that other half to complete them. Sure I can SURVIVE in the harsh world, alone and untouched, but do I want to?

Im all for not being a codependent ass to your partner and using that connection in order to escape lifes harsh realities. But I still think there are some very distorted, egocentric views going on in this thread.

The way I see it

:morningtoke:>:bunny:

If that makes sense :strokebeard:. I think we got a badass on our hands, not someone who is genuenly trying to help our fellow shroomerites

No. I need to be in touch with people and to take care of them to be happy, but a romantic relationship would be something I just wouldn't know how to handle. I can't imagine how I would behave in it, or what my partner would be like. I don't want to live up to any girl's expectations of what a man should be like, I just like being this person I am, even if most "normal" people consider me insane.

But that is how you should be in a relationship - yourself - the person you really are.

 Wow, I think you mean "super" and "loner." Read much?

I would say that whether you're wasting time in a bad relationship, or facing the world alone, we all struggle. It's a right of passage that we must go through at one point on the path to becoming mature. Some people get there earlier, some later and some never get there. After about 30, age is just a number.

I feel that getting married or attached at too young of an age dampens your perspective. Going through heartbreak and loneliness will force you to build inner strength. It's important to find a partner who also has that inner strength and maturity. That I feel, is necessary for a healthy sustainable relationship.

Yeah, seriously.? All the guys on here complain that women play mind games, meanwhile being completely different people around women, playing the same damn games they're complaining about.

Me and my girl are always ourselves around each other, completely straight up, and it's the most amazing, non-dramatic relationship I've ever experienced.

The person who I really am is kind of indifferent towards women and sexuality, for now. I value close friendships a lot more - they are more meaningful to me emotionally and intellectually. But all this might change.

I in no way meant to sound condescending. Like I said, everyone is unique in their opinions and ideas, I just wanted to know how other people felt about the topic.

For the record, I am not looking for a relationship but I am open to the possibility of one in the future. I don't regard myself as a loner, just a person who is content with being alone.
