How tougher classes in high school can help kids make it through college

Some 40 percent of students are failing to graduate from college in six years. A study calls for higher-quality college prep, with more advanced math, advanced placement classes, and better advising.

But what if high schools had a better recipe for preparing their students to stay in college? The National School Boards Association released a study Thursday afternoon highlighting some key ingredients: more advanced math courses, challenging courses such as Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB), and better academic advising.

If students are exposed to those factors ? even if they don?t earn high scores on the course exams ? they are more likely to continue college after their first year, a point at which many drop out, the study notes.

?This provides a rare glimpse into what high schools can do to really improve college success,? said Jim Hull, senior policy analyst at NSBA?s Center for Public Education, in a teleconference with reporters Thursday.

The findings don?t provide a silver bullet for school districts ? many of which are still debating whether to make higher math mandatory or to open up college-level AP courses to all students who are interested.

?There?s certainly a big correlation between students in high school who take advanced math and [those who] do well in college, but correlation is not cause and effect; it could very well be that the people whose future destiny is to do well in college also are good at doing math,? says David Klein, a math professor at California State University at Northridge who has studied AP math courses and found many of them to lack quality when compared with college courses.

But by providing details about how students from various achievement levels and socioeconomic backgrounds fare in college, NSBA?s study attempts to control for as many factors as possible in order to isolate elements that high schools can improve.

The study is based on data from more than 9,000 students who enrolled in college immediately after high school in the fall of 2004 ? a sample that represents more than 2 million students nationwide.

Saw Palmetto For Men's Health : Easy Health Options?

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) might rightfully be considered a man?s herb, because most of the research and discussion about this medicinal plant has focused on men?s health issues, including enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), lower urinary tract symptoms (usually associated with BPH), and male pattern baldness. Yet despite the growing number of published studies regarding saw palmetto and men?s maladies and the supplements available to manage them, there is still some disagreement among experts about the effectiveness of this popular herbal remedy.

Fortunately, scientists have been busy attempting to close the knowledge gap regarding saw palmetto and men?s health issues. Before we take a look at those most recent attempts and their findings, let?s take a brief look at saw palmetto itself.

What Is Saw Palmetto?

Saw palmetto, also known as the American dwarf palm tree, is a palm-like plant with spiny leaves found primarily in the Southeastern United States. Its dark red-black berries are rich in four major substances:

  • Phytosterols: including beta-sitosterol (among the most studied of the phytosterols), campesterol and stigmasterol. Phytosterols are chemically similar to cholesterol, but they actually have cholesterol-busting properties.
  • Fatty acids: including oleic acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid.
  • Free fatty alcohols: fatty acids attached to an alcohol molecule.
  • Monoglycerides: a type of fatty acid attached to glycerol molecules.

To make saw palmetto supplements, the berries are partially dried and treated with a solvent to break them down, eventually resulting in liquid extracts or capsules.

A growing number of men are turning to saw palmetto for men?s health conditions. One reason is that saw palmetto has been shown to reduce levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in prostate tissue. DHT plays a major role in the development of an enlarged prostate. Saw palmetto also has demonstrated abilities to inhibit the activity of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), another substance known to cause an enlarged prostate.

Along with saw palmetto?s effect on prostate enlargement is its impact on lower urinary tract symptoms that accompany BPH. A number of studies have shown that saw palmetto is an effective remedy for relieving lower urinary tract symptoms as well as symptoms associated with chronic, prostatitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the prostate.

Turning away from the prostate for a moment, saw palmetto may also help prevent or slow progression of male pattern baldness. That benefit also is associated with the herb?s ability to reduce DHT levels.

Studies Of Saw Palmetto

So, what do the researchers have to say about the ability of saw palmetto to improve men?s health? Here are some recent findings.

  • An Italian study (June 2012) conducted by a large team at Villa Tiberia Clinic reported on the use of saw palmetto in men with either an enlarged prostate or chronic prostatitis. Nearly 600 men were enrolled in the multicenter study and treated for six months with saw palmetto. All the men completed standard questionnaires concerning lower urinary tract symptoms and sexual function both before and after the treatment period. Saw palmetto use resulted in ?statistically significant improvement? in scores ?not only in an improvement in urinary symptoms but also in an overall improvement in patients? quality of life.? [1]
  • At the University of London, a study (April 2012) evaluated the use of saw palmetto (320 mg daily) in 82 men with an enlarged prostate in an open multicenter clinical pilot format. At the end of the eight-week study, the men improved significantly on sexual function, prostate symptoms and quality of life scores, and the supplement was well tolerated. The authors also noted that ?this was the first trial with saw palmetto to show improvement in BPH symptoms and SDys [sexual dysfunctions] as well.? [2]
  • An interesting study from the University of Messina (October 2011) reported on the use of saw palmetto along with two other natural supplements associated with prostate health: selenium and lycopene. It appears that saw palmetto, when taken along with the antioxidants selenium and lycopene, is more effective at reducing the weight and size of an enlarged prostate gland than use of saw palmetto alone. [3]
  • Worried about hair loss? A Colorado pilot study explored the use of a saw palmetto extract and beta-sitosterol in men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness. Investigators in the double-blind study reported that ?60% of (6/10) study subjects dosed with the active study formulation were rated as improved at the final visit.?[4]

Not every study has reported positive results regarding the effect of saw palmetto on men?s health. For example:

  • The authors of a Cochrane systematic review evaluated 17 randomized, controlled studies involving more than 2,000 individuals. Overall, reviewers found that saw palmetto was no better than placebo in reducing lower urinary tract symptoms, even when doses of the herbal remedy were doubled and tripled. Saw palmetto was not associated with any significant side effects.[5]
  • In a Journal of the American Medical Association article, a double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled trial involving 369 men explored the use of 320 mg per day or more of saw palmetto versus placebo on lower urinary tract symptoms. Overall, the reviewers did not see a significant difference in urinary tract symptoms when compared with placebo. [6]

Could saw palmetto help you? The only way to know is to try it. Although some users of saw palmetto have reported side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, they occur just as often as they do when men take a placebo. [7] Be sure to consult your healthcare provider before taking saw palmetto supplements or starting any supplement program.

HPV vaccination does not lead to an increase in sex, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? A study published in Vaccine reveals that contrary to recent discussions, the HPV vaccination does not increase sexual activity in adolescent girls.

There have been claims recently that the HPV (Human papillomavirus) vaccination increases sexual activity in adolescent girls as it effectively gives them a 'green light' to have sex because of a perceived protection against sexually transmitted infections. This study examines whether or not there is any influence on sexual behaviour as a result of being offered or given the vaccination.

The study looked at a cross-section of over 1,052 girls in the UK, with a mean age of 17.1 years. Of these, 433 had been offered the HPV vaccine and 620 had not yet been offered the vaccine. Results showed that the group of girls who had been offered the HPV vaccine were no more likely to be sexually active than the group of girls who had not yet been offered it.

Those who had been vaccinated (148 participants), were no more likely to have changed their condom use or increased their total number of sexual partners than the unvaccinated group (259 participants); providing evidence that neither being offered the vaccine or receiving the vaccine has an effect on the sexual behaviour of adolescent girls.

We?ve all experienced that sinking feeling you get when you look at an empty computer screen or a blank sheet of paper. Starting to write is the most difficult part of the process, and this is where formulas can help get you over that initial speed bump.

The first and easiest one is the interview. You can interview colleagues, clients, prospects or even yourself, if you?re so inclined. Here?s a clever idea you might want to consider.

Todd Black who?s in charge of business development for a large software firm in Silicon Valley, proposed writing a regular column entitled ?The Winner?s Profile?. It consisted of a short 300-word profile of leading executives in his industry. The benefits to Todd are numerous. It enables him to contact high profile prospects under a non-sales guise, which increases the likelihood of his call being returned. Who wouldn?t want to receive free publicity and ego fulfillment by being profiled in an article like this?

It was a great way to initiate a conversation, which ultimately turned into many productive business relationships. If the trade publication in your industry isn?t publishing such a ?winner?s profile?, suggest it. Smaller publications are often starving for articles and your suggestion is likely to be received extremely positively.

If you don?t have a prior endorsement from the trade publication, don?t let that stop you. You can write the article on ?spec?. That is you write the article first, and then seek places to get it published. This is how I typically work. You can pitch it this way when you call a high profile person in your industry that you want to interview.

?Hi. This Mark Satterfield and I?m in the process of preparing an article for submission to Our Industry Trade Journal on emerging trends and was hoping I could get 20 minutes of your time to interview you for the article.?

I ask for 20 minutes because it?s less demanding than asking for a half-hour but since hardly anyone actually schedules his or her time in 20-minute increments, you wind up getting at least a half-hour with the person.

Of course there is etiquette involved in this process. For example, you don?t want to conduct the interview and then never actually write the article. That will come back to haunt you. On the couple of occasions where I?ve written an article but haven?t found a place to publish it, I send a draft copy to the person I interviewed asking for their comments. Not only does this satisfy the individual?s curiosity about what you wrote, but it?s also another great excuse or reason to get back in contact with the person.

When the article does get published, I send everyone I interviewed a copy. This is a good idea to do even if you?re sure that they received a copy of the publication through other sources. It?s a nice professional touch, shows your consideration, and again it?s a great excuse to stay in contact!

The interview format is the easiest to write because you?re writing in the same style as you speak. Most people communicate just fine when they?re speaking. This conversational style also works very well when communicating on paper.

A test that one of my editors told me early in my writing career, is to read out loud what you?ve written. If it sounds like you speaking, it?s probably fine. Remember that in order to get published you?ve got to write. It?s been my experience that the interview format is the quickest way to get your next article produced.
