Saints Ride Winning Ways into NCAA Tournament

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The St. Scholastica baseball team has won its past 12 games and 27 of its past 28, making it a scary thought that the Saints may still have room to improve.

"It seems like we're growing up," St. Scholastica head coach Corey Kemp said. "We're learning every single game, every single practice."

The Saints won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) postseason title this past week, qualifying the team for an eighth consecutive NCAA regional tournament.

"We have more experience than we did last year," Saints junior outfielder Kyle Flagstad said. "The sophomores are juniors now and the juniors are seniors, so we expect to play well, make the plays, hit the ball, and win."
.
"That's our goal, to get to that regional championship game and see how things play out," Kemp said. "Once again, we have high expectations to go there and do well."

If they are to do well, the team knows the middle of the batting order needs to hit the baseball well.

"I love writing their names on the lineup card. Kyle Moody, Kyle Flagstad, three-hole, four-hole almost all year for us," Kemp said. "It's not just the confidence I have. When those guys walk in the box, they do have a little swagger, and they get the job done."

"It seems like every time I'm hitting, someone's on base," St. Scholastica senior catcher Kyle Moody said. "That makes it a bit easier to relax out there."

Winning has that effect too, and it's something to which this year's Saints have grown accustomed.

"There's something about that undefeated in the UMAC part that is really special," Moody said, "just getting used to winning and expecting to win every time you're out there."

The Saints open up play in the NCAA regional tournament on Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. game against North Park.
