How much would our health benefit from leaving the car at home?

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? A new study confirms that doing short journeys on foot rather than taking the car or motorbike would avoid the death of 108 men and 79 women a year in Catalonia alone. This would imply annual savings of more than 200 million euros.

Researchers from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB), headed by Catherine P?rez from the Healthcare Information Systems Service, have estimated the yearly economic benefits from a reduction in death rates by substituting at least one short vehicle journey for a walk.

The authors conducted a cross-sectional study based on Catalonia's Mobility Survey performed by the Generalitat and the Metropolitan Transport Agency in 2006 which documents the journeys of more than one hundred thousand people.

Then, 80,552 individuals over 17 years of age who did at least one journey were selected and researchers calculated the number of men and women who did not meet daily physical exercise recommendations but travelled by car or motorbike for journeys up to five minutes long.

In order to calculate the annual economic benefits, the 'Health Economic Evaluation Tool (HEAT)' was used. It was designed by the WHO and estimates the benefits of reduced mortality by increasing physical exercise.

For their economic estimations, as set out by HEAT, the researchers took in account certain parameters: 150 minutes walked each week, a relative risk of 0.78 for all deaths linked to walking half an hour a day, a mortality rate in Spain of 21,349 deaths per 100,000 people between the ages of 20 and 49 years and a statistical value of a person's life of ?1,300,000 according to the "willingness to pay" methodology.

This study has been published in the 'European Journal of Public Health' and its results reveal that 77.2% of men and 67.7% of women in Catalonia do not reach recommended daily amounts of physical exercise when walking.

"However, 15.6% and 13.9% respectively would reach recommendations if they were to substitute at least one short, 5 minute vehicle journey," as explained by Marta Olabarria, lead author of the study.

Walking is a sport

Through the Global Strategy on Diet Physical Activity and Health, the WHO states that it is necessary to do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week. Walking to get around is considered a moderate physical activity and is perfect to meet exercise recommendations.

Conversing computers trip up on pop

Dan Falk,contributor

?What are your favourite Sci Fi movies??

?I like Star Wars and The Matrix,? comes the typed reply.

I am trying to work out if I?m talking to a ?hidden human? in the next room, or actually a machine located somewhere in cyberspace.

?Can we agree that the prequels sucked?? I continue.

?Absolutely! Lucas should be shot!?

That settled it - only a flesh-and-blood movie buff could be so enraged by The Phantom Menace.

This was one of the easier to gauge exchanges I had as Judge J-18 in last weekend?s ?Turing-test marathon? at Bletchley Park in central England. The test aims to separate the humans from the machines through rigorous questioning by judges. It was designed over 60 years ago by Alan Turing, the grandfather of computers, whose work in Hut #8 at Bletchley Park played a vital role in the Allied code-breaking effort during the Second World War.

Saturday?s marathon, along with similar events worldwide, were in celebration of Turing?s centenary. The largest Turing test undertaken, Saturday?s session tried to recreate what the great man envisaged in his 1950 paper outlining its methodology.

So, what is it actually like to be a judge in a Turing test? Anxious to find out, I signed up months in advance for the Bletchley Park event. The premise is similar to interrogating a spy: ask enough questions, and eventually the suspect tips his hand. As Turing envisioned it, you?d have a human behind one opaque screen, and a computer behind another. A judge sits in front of them with no way of knowing who or what is behind each screen. The judge can ask questions of the two entities; they reply by text-based chat. If the machine is so good at producing human-like responses that the judge can?t tell which is which, based on a five-minute conversation, the machine is on its way to passing the Turing test.

Turing didn?t expect any machine to fool all the judges all the time, but he speculated that by the year 2000 ?an average interrogator will not have more than 70 per cent chance of making the right identification? - that is, computer programs would stymie the judges 30 per cent of the time. Twelve years late, this year's test set out to see if we could finally reach that bar.

The tests took place in the mansion?s former billiards room, where I took my seat next to the other Session 1 judges, each of us perched in front of a standard PC. Huma Shah, the event?s organizer, explained the rules: There would be two kinds of tests. In one version, the judge would chat with a single unseen entity for five minutes. In the other version, there would be a split screen, and the judges would converse with two entities at the same time, again for five minutes, trying to deduce if one (or both, or none) of the entities was a machine.

In several cases, the computers gave themselves away nearly from the start. If my correspondent couldn?t answer a simple question, or changed the subject abruptly and for no apparent reason, it struck me as almost certainly a machine.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, we have my almost-certainly-human Star Wars buff, or the Beatles fan I encountered - ?best band ever? - who, when asked to choose between the Rolling Stones and The Who, replied ?definitely The Stones - The Who went too stadium toward the end.? While I disagree with the sentiment - in my mind, The Who made great music right up to the band?s split in the early 80s - the reply seemed far too? well, far too human? to be written by a machine.

Other exchanges, however, seemed far more ambiguous. When I said I was from Canada, one respondent said they heard ?great things? about Canada, ?except that Quebec is very French.? Was that something a computer might cough up after spending a few milliseconds skimming the Wikipedia entry for my country? Or is it just a human with a vague memory of what their school teacher once said about Canada, perhaps tinged with mild anti-French prejudice? Or was it merely a person who had grown tired after a couple of hours of conversing with strangers by text?

In devising the game, Turing was acknowledging that mastery of language is often seen as going hand in hand with intelligence. Indeed, linguistic ability involves more than just stringing words together into sentences. Holding down a conversation likely depends on a whole host of other cognitive abilities - the ability to monitor one?s own thoughts, one?s environment, other creatures - perhaps even to guess what other people are thinking. Children acquire these cognitive skills as a part of their ordinary development. Instilling such capability in a machine, on the other hand, is a herculean challenge, and the programmers behind Saturday?s chatbots should be lauded for getting their creations to perform as well as they did. The best program, Eugene Goostman, a chatbot with the personality of a 13 year old boy, nearly passed the test, fooling the judges just shy of the 30 per cent mark suggested by Turing in his 1950 paper.

The Turing test marathon showed just how challenging it is for a machine to carry on a real conversation. As Mark Twain might have put it, you can fool some of the judges some of the time - but not much more than that. At least, not quite yet.

I Want to Start an Automotive Car Detailing Company | Internet ...

I see that you are considering starting an automotive car detailing company and that is a good choice because there are over 250 million cars in the United States of America in each year automakers sell another 17 million cars throughout our country. Let?s face it we are a car nation and therefore it makes sense if you?re going to start a small business of you?re own or a home based business you will want to start a company where you could have lots of customers.

Since everyone owns a car it makes sense to start in automotive car detailing company. But you need to consider a strategy of which type of customers you?re going to go after and how best to market to those customers. Often we see new automotive car detailing companies buying expensive phonebook ads and this is unfortunate because your best customers always come from referrals or friends of friends.

It takes a while to get the hang of car detailing because each car is a little different, but eventually you can become a master of the trade. There are two types of main customers in auto car detailing; there is the wholesale detail customer like car lots and auto dealerships and there is the customer who is a private party who owns a very expensive car and wants to keep it in pristine shape.

The going rate for wholesale auto detailing for car dealerships is between 50 and $75. But the average going rate for detailing for private parties can be his high as $100 to $200. Now you can see why so many people want to get into the automotive car detailing business and start a business in automotive car detailing of their own.

But I must warn you it is not easy work and if you do not do good job then you will not have the referrals you need to make a lot of money in the future. Every business is a risk and this is something you should consider in 2006.

Update for Google Play Movies app includes new UI and TV shows

Android Central

Google has been busy showing us what's new in the world of Android at Google I/O. These include big updates to the Google Play Store. A main complaint I've had for a while is that I can only rent movies through the store. Well, they fixed that today by adding the option to rent or buy as well as add TV shows. It's a welcomed update that is now available for the Google Play Movies app. It appears as though TV shows aren't quite available for purchase or rent yet, but I'm sure that will change very soon. To get the latest update in the Google Play Store, please follow the links after the break.

Significant sea-level rise in a two-degree warming world

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Sea levels around the world can be expected to rise by several metres in coming centuries, if global warming carries on. Even if global warming is limited to 2 degrees Celsius, global-mean sea level could continue to rise, reaching between 1.5 and 4 metres above present-day levels by the year 2300, with the best estimate being at 2.7 metres, according to a study just published in Nature Climate Change. However, emissions reductions that allow warming to drop below 1.5 degrees Celsius could limit the rise strongly.

The study is the first to give a comprehensive projection for this long perspective, based on observed sea-level rise over the past millennium, as well as on scenarios for future greenhouse-gas emissions.

"Sea-level rise is a hard to quantify, yet critical risk of climate change," says Michiel Schaeffer of Climate Analytics and Wageningen University, lead author of the study. "Due to the long time it takes for the world's ice and water masses to react to global warming, our emissions today determine sea levels for centuries to come."

Limiting global warming could considerably reduce sea-level rise

While the findings suggest that even at relatively low levels of global warming the world will have to face significant sea-level rise, the study also demonstrates the benefits of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and subsequent temperature reductions could halve sea-level rise by 2300, compared to a 2-degree scenario. If temperatures are allowed to rise by 3 degrees, the expected sea-level rise could range between 2 and 5 metres, with the best estimate being at 3.5 metres.

The potential impacts are significant. "As an example, for New York City it has been shown that one metre of sea level rise could raise the frequency of severe flooding from once per century to once every three years," says Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, co-author of the study. Also, low lying deltaic countries like Bangladesh and many small island states are likely to be severely affected.

Sea-level rise rate defines the time for adaptation

The scientists further assessed the rate of sea-level rise. The warmer the climate gets, the faster the sea level climbs. "Coastal communities have less time to adapt if sea-levels rise faster," Rahmstorf says.

"In our projections, a constant level of 2-degree warming will sustain rates of sea-level rise twice as high as observed today, until well after 2300," adds Schaeffer, "but much deeper emission reductions seem able to achieve a strong slow-down, or even a stabilization of sea level over that time frame."

Building on data from the past

Previous multi-century projections of sea-level rise reviewed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were limited to the rise caused by thermal expansion of the ocean water as it heats up, which the IPCC found could reach up to a metre by 2300. However, this estimate did not include the potentially larger effect of melting ice, and research exploring this effect has considerably advanced in the last few years. The new study is using a complementary approach, called semi-empirical, that is based on using the connection between observed temperature and sea level during past centuries in order to estimate sea-level rise for scenarios of future global warming.

"Of course it remains open how far the close link between temperature and global sea level found for the past will carry on into the future," says Rahmstorf. "Despite the uncertainty we still have about future sea level, from a risk perspective our approach provides at least plausible, and relevant, estimates."

Reese Witherspoon Admits: I'm Very Round!

Reese Witherspoon has confirmed that she's pregnant.

Three months after a tabloid broke the exciting news, this Oscar winner was feted in Chicago on Saturday night and spoke for the first time on expecting her third child, this one with husband Jim Toth.

Reese Witherspoon Red Carpet Pose

When a reporter from The Chicago Sun-Times told Reese how beautiful she looked, the lovely actress simply replied: "Thanks, but frankly I'm feeling very round tonight."

The star was in The Windy City for “An Evening With Reese Witherspoon,” an event whose proceeds benefit the Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute and at which Witherspoon received the Renaissance Award.

Adding that she's due in late summer or early fall, the star also joked about her appetite when asked about Chicago's famous deep-dish pizza, saying:

"I’m always feeling like I’d like to eat everything in sight!”

An inexpensive wedding gift idea

Recipe book suppliesI?ve reached the age ? and time of year ? where all my friends are getting married. And in between new dresses and shoes and traveling to the ceremonies and bridal showers and so on, there?s always the actual wedding gift.

This weekend ? today, in fact ? my sister?s best friend is getting married in South Carolina. She was registered at multiple places, but I decided to go a different route. So I created a recipe book.

I expected, honestly, to find a recipe organizer (or something similar) at Target, but I had no such luck. So I began to improvise ? a fun-looking journal? Well, not if she wanted to move the recipes around and organize them differently. A wire box of index cards? Not very fancy.

Then I found the photo albums.

I chose a smaller one (104 slots), and then headed over to the index cards. The 4?6 size fit perfectly into the sleeves, since they?re made for 4?6 photos. I picked up a sheet of letter stickers to make the ?cover page,? if you will, and headed home.

Recipe book cover pageOnce there, I used the alphabet stickers for the first page. Then I collected my cookbooks and own recipe cards. For the most part, I tried to copy over recipes I?d used myself ? that way, I knew I wasn?t giving her duds. My choices varied from dinners to salads to appetizers to salad dressings to breads to desserts. After I had 30 or 40 cards, I started to organize so I could see where my gaps were ? I only had one pork recipe, for instance.

It took me about a week to copy over 60 recipes, which I mostly did as I caught up on TV or watched a movie at night or over the weekend. The ingredients went on the front, ruled side of the card, and the instructions went on the back.

Recipe book recipesIn the end, it turned out well. The cards can be removed, rearranged or have notes added. And after I copied 60 recipes, i filled the other slots with blank index cards. Hopefully Kate and Josh can enjoy themselves trying out a new recipe or two ? and add their own, if they want.

Here?s how the cost broke down:

Photo album ? $8
Alphabet stickers ? 99 cents
Two packs (200) 4?6 index cards ? $1.68
Wedding card ? $3.29
Total: $13.96

I'm the books editor and a multiplatform copy editor at the York Daily Record / Sunday News. I dabble in green living, food, gardening and -- of course -- all things books-related. Have an idea, suggestion or comment? Email me at schain@ydr.com.

Why Facebook Is Folding On Credits And Doubling Down On Payments

attachment (1)In a surprising move this week, with just a short post on their Developer Blog, Facebook has ended their three-year experi ment with the virtual currency of Facebook Credits. Credits will be phased out by the end of the year and users will simply have a Facebook account with a balance measured in Dollars in the U.S., or whatever currency is native to a country. Facebook?s new member accounts will function similarly to an iTunes account: a user adds a credit card to their account, digital goods can be purchased and immediately charged to the card on file, or can be drawn from stored value in that account. ?If you are given a Facebook gift card, in card or digital form, you would add that reward code to your account and that value would be stored until you use it ? just like an iTunes gift card is added to your account and stored until spent.

Woolworths South Africa ropes in RedPrairie to enhance retail experience

RBR Staff Writer Published 22 June 2012

Woolworths South Africa has roped in supply chain and retail technology provider RedPrairie to provide a workforce management solution (WFM) to help improve the customer experience in-store.

RedPrairie said its WFM solution leverages engineered standards and demand-based forecasts to optimize scheduling, task assignment, and performance measurement as well as compute and pay incentives.

Woolworths plans to use RedPrairie's WFM to leverage point of sale data to generate accurate forecasting and to improve compliance with optimised schedules.

The global supply chain firm claims that its solution will give managers visibility of key performance indicators and tools to manage performance, ensuring that the right persons are available in the right place at the right time.

RedPrairie senior vice president Andrew Kirkwood said, "The performance management capabilities of our workforce solution will enable Woolworths to better serve its customers by more efficiently managing its workforce."

Woolworths, which operates more than 400 retail stores in the country, offers customers a wide range of clothing, food, homeware and beauty products as well as financial services.

As Sandusky case heads to jury, adopted son makes allegations

Matt Sandusky, one of six adopted children of Jerry Sandusky and his wife, Dottie, released a statement Thursday saying his father molested him. Also Thursday, lawyers delivered closing arguments in the case.

    By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / June 21, 2012

On the same afternoon that the criminal trial of Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky heads to the jury, lawyers for his adopted son released a statement saying his father molested him.

Matt Sandusky, one of six adopted children of the elder Mr. Sandusky and his wife, Dottie, said through his attorneys late Thursday that he had been preparing testimony in case he was called as a witness for the prosecution. The attorneys, Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici, said Matt Sandusky contacted them ?during the trial? to arrange a meeting with the prosecutors to provide help for their case.

?At Matt?s request, we immediately arranged a meeting between him and the prosecutors and investigators,? a statement from the attorneys reads.

Jerry Sandusky was arrested in November and charged with 52 criminal counts related to the sexual molestation of 10 boys over a 15-year period. He says he is innocent of all charges, while prosecutors say he used a charity to carry on systematic abuse of boys in hotel rooms, locker room showers, and the basement of his home.

The attorney statement did not explain why the prosecution didn?t use the younger Mr. Sandusky as a witness against his father. The elder Sandusky never testified in the trial, and it is now speculated that he stayed off the stand because it would have made him vulnerable to charges from his son. Those charges would be considered more damaging because of their closer relationship.

The younger Sandusky was a foster child from The Second Mile, the charity operated by Jerry Sandusky. He was later adopted. Matt Sandusky was mentioned in the trial last week when one accuser said that he and Jerry Sandusky followed Matt into a locker room shower.

When the elder Sandusky was arrested and ordered under house arrest, Matt Sandusky?s ex-wife successfully obtained a court order that prevented their three children from sleeping over at the home of their grandparents. ?

On Thursday, Judge John Cleland reduced the counts to 48, saying one count duplicated another and two were not supported by the testimony presented in the trial. A fourth count was dropped earlier this week because Judge Cleland found the statute on which the charge was based was not in effect when the alleged incident took place.

Closing arguments ended early Thursday afternoon in the Centre County courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., with the lead attorneys on both sides questioning the credibility of each other?s witnesses.

Lead defense attorney Joseph Amendola used his 75-minute statement to tell jurors not to trust the eight accusers who testified last week. Mr. Amendola suggested they collectively embellished their stories in an effort to seek cash damages for a subsequent civil trial. He also criticized the testimony of two Pennsylvania state troopers who investigated the claims, suggesting they encouraged the victims to conspire and did not pursue alternate leads that might prove Sandusky?s innocence.

?The lawyers want to make all these dollars, but it still doesn?t mean Mr. Sandusky did this,? he said. ?The system decided Mr. Sandusky was guilty, and the system set out to convict him.?

Lead prosecutor Joseph McGettigan shrugged off the defense strategy as unrealistic and desperate when weighed against what he described as ?overwhelming? evidence against Sandusky: handwritten letters and gifts, the testimony of eight accusers, and the eyewitness account of Mike McQueary, an assistant football coach who was the only witness, aside from the accusers, to the alleged abuse.

?The great thing about conspiracy theories is you just let them go on and on, until they collapse under their own weight,? Mr. McGettigan said.

McGettigan also used Sandusky?s media appearances to suggest he was disconnected from reality. One example used was an NBC interview soon after his arrest in which he did not respond with a vehement denial when asked if he was attracted to boys.

Much of the case for both sides focused on Sandusky?s affectionate behavior and attitude toward the accusers. While the defense stressed his actions never became sexual and could be explained by a mental-health disorder that exaggerates romantic feelings, prosecutors said Sandusky was driven by a predatory instinct.

With both sides providing different interpretations of similar behavior, Cleland stressed to jurors which could be interpreted as criminal and which could not.

?It?s not necessarily a crime for a man to take a shower with a boy. It?s not necessarily a crime for a man to wash a boy?s hair or lather his back or shoulders or to engage in back rubbing,? Cleland said.

He said jurors needed to focus on Sandusky?s intent and not necessarily ?the child?s reaction.?

Cleland ordered the jury sequestered while it deliberates. If a verdict is not reached Friday, they must continue through the weekend, he said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The high temperatures that made life hot and miserable throughout the Northeast are expected to return, with readings in the mid- to high-90s.

Water-guzzling residents who stayed close to their air conditioners will have to get through Thursday before temperatures are expected to start cooling down.

Wednesday, the first official day of summer, saw record-setting temperatures from New York City to Burlington, Vt.

Several relatives of high school graduates were treated for heat exhaustion at an outdoor ceremony in North Bergen, N.J., and taken to a hospital. Ambulances were on standby at the event, which was held outside to accommodate about 5,000 people, said Capt. Gerald Sanzari of the North Bergen Police Department.

A similar scene took place in New Britain, Conn., where several people were taken to a hospital after suffering heat-related symptoms while attending the New Britain High School graduation. Captain David Koscuk of the New Britain EMS told the New Britain Herald that 24 people suffered from heat exhaustion or fainting and half of them were taken to area hospitals.

According to the National Weather Service, it hit 94 degrees at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, passing the 93-degree mark set in 1995. The 98-degree temperatures at LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport passed records set in 1953, when highs reached 96 at LaGuardia and 97 at Newark.

In New England, the mercury hit 97 degrees at Bradley airport in Hartford, Conn., breaking the 1995 record of 96 degrees. Record temperatures were also seen in Burlington, Vt., and Houlton, Maine, which reached 95 degrees and 90 degrees, up from 94 and 89.

Even places that didn't break records were extremely hot. In Washington, the airports topped out at 98, just shy of setting new heat marks. The mercury in Philadelphia rose to 97 degrees, one degree short of the record of 98 set in 1931.

Every state in the Lower 48 except for North Dakota was forecast to have 90-degree weather until Saturday, according to a model by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the agency in charge of weather, climate and oceans.

Deborah Otchere, 59, mapped out a tree-lined route to work and brought a change of clothes to her job as a secretary in a Washington law firm. Among her traveling supplies was a partially frozen bottle of water.

"You live here long enough, you know how to prepare," she said.

More than 450 cooling centers were being opened around New York City, which is under a hot weather advisory. Mayor Michael Bloomberg encouraged people without air conditioning to seek out the cooler spaces or visit the city's beaches.

On New York's Long Island, Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, cautioned against keeping pets in vehicles, noting temperatures can reach 120 degrees within minutes.

"Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke when trapped in these high temperatures," Gross said.
