Obama Diagnoses Romney with "Romnesia" on Campaign Trail

President Barack Obama made a campaign stop at George Mason University on Friday that made headlines for his use of the social media term "Romnesia" to describe Republican challenger Mitt Romney's approach to political issues. The president reportedly got laughs and cheers from the crowd for his remarks, which touched on topics ranging from women's rights to tax cuts and healthcare, according to ABC/OTUS News and other media outlets.

Obama went on to describe several symptoms of "Romnesia," drawing media comparisons to comedian Jeff Foxworthy's "you might be a redneck if" style of delivery. He finished his speech by proclaiming that Obamacare "covers pre-existing conditions" and that he and his campaign had a "cure" for Romney's proposed policies, as quoted by ABC/OTUS News.

Here is some of the key information regarding the term "Romnesia" and Obama's remarks to the crowd at George Mason University on Friday.

* "Romnesia" was reportedly coined by a Twitter user back in March. The tweeter, who goes by the name @BreakingNuts, has widely been given credit for the term, which was picked up by Katrina vanden Huevel, the editor of The Nation, and retweeted, according to a timeline provided by Politico.

* The Nation's tweet went out to its 55,000 Twitter followers before moving on to Facebook and other outlets. Several commentators, including Timothy Lange from Daily Kos and The Guardian's George Monbiot, have used it since, further spreading the term, according to the Politico piece.

* "Romnesia" was defined by the original tweeter as "a severe form of amnesia that strikes dishonest politicians."

* According to a report by NBC News, Obama has been charging Romney for weeks with what he calls "a shift" in the Republican candidate's policies towards a more moderate position, a tactic the president has said is merely a political maneuver designed to sway voters in the final weeks before the elections.

* Romney's campaign was quick to criticize Obama's remarks. Danny Diaz, a Romney campaign senior advisor posted his own message on Twitter on Friday, saying that "America doesn't need a comedy routine; it needs a serious plan to fix the economy," as quoted by the Washington Post.

* Amanda Henneberg, a Romney spokeswoman in Virginia, also commented on the president's remarks, charging that Obama was resorting to "scare tactics" because he doesn't "have a plan to run on" for a second term in office, as also quoted by the Washington Post.
